Welcome to Greenfield

A locals guide to tourism in Greenfield.

Views over the Royal George Mills towards Dovestones, click to enlarge.

Greenfield is situated N.E. of Oldham in the green pennine hills that once were part of West Yorkshire. It makes up one of the Saddleworth villages along with Delph,Diggle,Dobcross,Denshaw and Uppermil, extending on its north eastern side towards Holmfirth along Saddleworth moor, to Mossley and Oldham in the east and south west.

Greenfiled has a long and varied history with legend and local folk lore surrounding many an interesting and compelling story,
it was once a woolen town with still a few of the mills remaining today, the picture above is of the Royal George mills which until a recently as 1998 was the only producer of piano felt left in the UK,and a personal favourite of mine as I myself was employed there up until its closure.Other mills in Greenfield still in operation are The Knoll spinning company on Chew Valley road,Robert Fletcher's paper mill situated on the road going out of Greenfield towards Dovestones reservoirs and on the same road can be found Tanners mill and other units close by.

Whit Friday weekend.

There are many traditions in Saddleworth but non so well known as the Whit Friday band contest, when Brass Bands from all over the country come to compete in this street gala for its prestigious prizes and national recognition, and were the steets of the villages are lined with revellers from all over who come to savour this time honoured local tradition.
This is always followed on the Saturday by Saddleworth beer walk,a colourful display as thousands of competitors dress in allsorts of unimagionable attire and try to be the first to complete the hugh beer walk trek which takes in all the local villages returning to its starting point of  The Churchill Playing fields in Greenfield sometime in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Local Pubs.

There is always a welcome in Greenfield's drinking establishments for locals and tourists alike,The Wellington situated close to Knoll spinning on Chew valley road, the Railway is on the approach into Greenfield on the "bad bend",The King William locally known as the "King Bill" is farther up Chew Valley road and is Greenfields most well known pub,and the Clarence Hotel on the corner of Chew Valley and Manchester road the last pub before Yorkshire. There are also two social clubs in the shape of the reasonably priced Greenfield Conservative club on Chew Valley road and Greenfield Cricket club at the side of the King Bill

Shops on Chew Valley road

A wide number of varied and interesting shops line each side of Chew Valley road Newsagents one of which opens at 5 am.a Confectioners,Bicycle repairs ,Greengrocers,Village service station,Butchers shop,CO OP,and the manditory Wine store to the locally famous Bakery next to the known around these parts for its excellent home made pies, these are a must if you are visiting the village.

Dovestones Reservoir

Dovestones is situated on the road leading out of Greenfield towards Holmfirth,it is a popular and picturesque spot with the main resevoir having its own sailing club , a marked path all the way round has benches with some breath-taking views and places to sit and eat picnics. For the more adventurous there is a second reservoir to walk round which eventually leads onto Saddleworth moor and into Yorkshire. There is ample parking space on a very cheap pay and display system with a burger van in regular attendance.A wardens centre and toilets are alse provided for your convenience.
